Honest Joe restoration finally done!

("Newby needs help with 'Honest Joe'" topic merged with "Honest Joe restoration finally done!" - Site Admin.) It's Honest Joe! 24 winning cups, and 1 losing cup-- you can't lose (or can you? I wonder...). Life is in another cycle of hectic fun, leaving me little time to work on ...

Re: Newby needs help with 'Honest Joe'

And another question, if you all would be so kind...
The bumper/plunger thingy that hits the ball-- is it supposed to be just steel on the tip, or should it have a layer of brass, rubber, or something else?
Thanks!

Re: Newby needs help with 'Honest Joe'

Some UK (and presumably US) garden centres sell flexible transparent plastic for constructing cloches, poly-tunnels etc. It comes on a roll in two thicknesses and offers the advantage of UV protecting your paperwork (with a very slight blue tint - unnoticeable in use). Thanks for the resource info....

Re: Homemade Allwin payout mechanism

Thanks for all the feedback. I simply could not have built this without all of the help I received here. It was such a fun part of the project that several other ongoing projects had to wait in the wings. The tube is standard 1.5" OD aluminum tubing. The OD is larger than an original because I ...

Homemade Allwin payout mechanism

Because my precious Allwin was missing its payout mechanism, I had to make my own.
Ta-da! %|%
You'll see that I melted the aluminium coin hopper with my semi-inept brazing skills, but here it is.
Works like a charm.
The first picture is an original that I used as a model.

Re: Newby needs help with 'Honest Joe'

Hey there! I finally finished my payout mechanism for this machine (see Homemade Allwin payout mechanism - Site Admin) . 15 minutes here, a few minutes there... With all the variation in penny thickness ranging over 70 years in age, plus the 1 coin payout design, it had to be milled to very tight to...

Re: What's proper/typical payout for 24 cup Allwin?

Thanks.
But... where's the fun in that? You would win nothing but your coin back then. Seems like a naughty ripoff :D

What's proper/typical payout for 24 cup Allwin?

"Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!" thread merged with "What's proper/typical payout for 24 cup Allwin?" - Site Admin. Please excuse my ignorance. Being from the US I never get to see these machines in person and didn't grow up with them. :NBG: Is the typical payout for a 24 winnin...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Thanks so much for ripping back into your machine and taking all those measurements. It is a great help. I'll try and do you proud on the reproduction. I jumped the gun and bought materials earlier today. My only mistake was the tube, which has a larger inner diameter than this. I'm quite surprised ...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Superb!! .... what did you use to chemically do the patina? Thanks! I tried various things, such as ammonia gassing, deep into the night, but the results were too uniform and only hit the surface. Finally I did the following; 1/3 cup vinegar 1/3 cup custodial strength, non-sudsing ammonia, 2 tables...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

allwin-parts.jpg new-hinge.jpg Here are pictures of my homemade replacement hinges (in brass). The original plan was to nickel plate them to stay somewhat true to the original (pictured upper right), but I liked the rich patina of the existing brass so decided instead to chemically patina the hinge...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

slotalot: I like! You are surely an evil genius. \|\/|/ Wait for it... wait for it... !WORSHIPFULL! Thanks for working on this! However, this leaves me with concerns. Each half of the hinge allows for only 5/8" to install 2 screws. Tiny screws that also aren't positioned in the center of the wo...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Thanks for all the info! !THANKS! I will do my best to do it justice. I think it will work out well with some care and patience. I'd love to have some measurements but I think I can get a sufficient sense of scale from the parts that are there and the images so kindly provided here. If it works out,...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

I did see those. Thanks.
Problem is they are far too thin. I need the 1/8" plates to sufficiently fill the 3/8" gap cut into the wood door (and to have a correct look).

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Thanks Arrgee. I'll work Nigel over for the goods. I'm rolling around all sorts of ideas for making hinges form existing large plate hinges off the shelf, etc, but that just makes me feel like a hack. Nothing like having an original.
Hey, who knows, maybe he'll be able to score me a payout mechanism.

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Peter and PennyMac, thanks so much for the pictures and all the help! It looks like a pretty straightforward build (famous last words? !!SUICIDAL!! ). You guys are great !!CHEERS!! So... it would be much easier on me if I were to build these out of aluminum (or, since it's British, alumin-e-um ;-) )...

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Thanks Stuart!
That looks great! Very nice indeed. I was wondering if brass would be strong enough for this application. I was thinking about manufacturing them out of stainless, but this approach is more sane.
I like it! !WORSHIPFULL!

Re: Newby buys Allwin. Needs help!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I myself am recovering from the pints that kept me warm while I searched every dark corner of the internet until the wee hours looking for hinges that simply do not exist.
