I think the bucket was to accommodate spitting out your chewing tobacco prior to the photo. At least, that's what they're used for here in Tennessee.

I used to own a later version of the Chicago Coin "Basketball Champ." Same game, different case. It was a fantastic game and a delight to play. The original version, offered here, is well worth the starting bid, provided it works.
