New addition - Bryans Trickler

Post by ddstoys »

Well guys I’m pretty excited about this one. Bryan’s games don’t come up very often here in Australia so when this was hand balled to me I had to jump on it.

Even better, it’s actually been sited in Australia which I love.

Great to have one with actual Australian history.
It's the same in Britain with Lambretta scooters. So many have come in 'late', from Spain and India, that having one that was actually HERE during the Mods & Rockers era, is just a little bit 'special'.

Well it arrived this morning. Sadly, I have work tonight so don’t have time to play. At first glance the lower glass is missing, so it's missing the balls (feed tubes still full).
Does anyone know what sizes balls these should be? Mine has about 3 different sizes in the feed tube.
Also the armature that steps the score counter looks to be missing a bracket that holds it onto the score cog. I’ll find out more on the weekend.

They're way bigger than I first expected.

Bought enough new balls today to trick it into half a game so made a quick video to show the game play. Does anyone have one of these? There’s a few issues I’d like to see what’s missing

What a cracking game! Never seen one working before, so thank you for posting that clip. I think that would be quite addictive.

What holds the rod in place that advances the score dial?
Mine's attached to the win lever, but there’s nothing to hold it to the cog.

Also the springs for the ball lift/cup return - how strong are they? Mine has two and I struggle to move the cups.

The springs are not too tight and levers are easy to move.

It's a great game and the sound of the ball falling is quite pleasing. I don't know why it wasn't designed to pay out though?

Not sure. The Trickler was one of Bryans first machines, circa 1933. Perhaps it was to do with gambling laws at the time? Obviously it was a skill game rather than chance.

According to the flyer:
A revolution in this class of game. The game for Clubs and Pubs. or anywhere where a few of the fellows gather together... The machine is unquestionably a game of skill, the ball being under the control of the player all the time.
Clearly conceived to find a market in locations avoiding a run in with the law on payout games. The hidden gambling agenda was "the fellows" wagering on their scores or the pub paying prizes over the bar. Sometimes a prize score was ticketed on the machine.
Nice example in the Museum.

Surprised you have not had a response unless done via a PM, but then again maybe not with the lack of enthusiasm these days. I cannot help as don’t own one, obviously smaller balls. If this prompt does not get some interest of help, there is one for sale on the Melright site with email address who maybe willing to advice.

Hi Simon
I can’t remember the size off the top of my head. I’ll try to remember to measure them when I get home. And I’ll find how many balls it needs - it’s around 50 from memory.

I have been a bit tied up with "stuff" recently so I have not had time to measure my balls!

Now I have got round to it tonight I realise that I have absolutely no idea how to read the scale on my micrometer :woops:

So for those of you who are technically minded, or engineers, here are a couple of photos of my ball.

I hope this helps!

Ha ha, of course it depends if it is metric or imperial. I can see 8ths on the end, which makes me wonder if imperial. Looks old and knackered  If metric, 6mm which sounds a bit small or imperial, maybe 6th of something. !PUZZLED!
