Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
I saw two slot machines crop up in dramas on TV yesterday. Unfortunately, I cant supply clips. The first was a scene in the new TV series remake of "Perry Mason" (set in the '30s more like the original books than the old 50's TV series) The bad guys meet in a small dark room full of 1930's Jennings machines. I couldn't see the point of the tiny room unless it was the slot collection of one of the bad guys
The second was more interesting, a 2019 movie called "Unbroken 'Path to Redemption'" set in 1946 west coast USA the main guy returns from the war and visits his old local bar, on the wall, much to my surprise, was a Brenner "past the arrow". not many of those in the USA

Haven't seen this one for years. It's on my rewatch list. Ken Loach celebrated his 84th birthday a couple of weeks ago.
Looks like a Myers Road Test, left of Carol White, at the start of the clip.

Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
I thought maybe it looked narrower because the aspect ratio on that clip isn't right. If you un-squeeze it, the machine to its left starts to resemble a Bolland Working model.
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
spooky.......both pics have a Bolland working model to its left
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
I haven’t managed to find a clip, but another movie being shown on Talking Picture TV with a clip of an arcade is The Punch and Judy Man 1963 with Tony Hancock. The arcade shot I believe was in Bognor Regis with lots of interesting machines from wall machines to floor standers, some I did not recognise. Seems all efforts to capture period arcades goes to our old film makers.......anyway if anyone manages to capture a clip as I do not have any record facility and they repeat machines many times on this channel...quirky film.
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
Does anyone recognise the arcade in Doomwatch: 'You killed Toby Wren'?
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
As you say TF, very quirky but it shows Tony Hancock was a much better actor than I ever imagined from his radio and TV series. Pity about the script.
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
The next showing of 'The Punch and Judy man' on Talking Pictures tv is Thursday 27th August at 2.30 pm.

What a lovely newsreel. It has a feel from an earlier era than 1983. As probably mentioned before, it is always a shame when the history of machines disappears as I doubt many that still exist will have providence passed on or remembered. What a great lady she was.
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
You're spot on Treefrog, the history of machines often gets lost. I'm lucky I have a few of the machines from this auction, ones I used to play as a kid on a Saturday afternoon. The owner of Barrys Amusements, Mrs Minnie Delino (Chipperfield) was a remarkable lady indeed and was a friend of my mum's… she took no prisoners!!
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
Here is Minnie with her keys, looks like she operated the arcade till 85 years old and some of the inside
Re: Vintage Slots in Films and Newsreels
Spent a lot of the 1970s in that arcade. Yes, Minnie closed it when she was in her 85th year. She kept her fish and chip shop and ice-cream business until she passed away in 1987. Her favourite machine was the Laughing Sailor and didn't feature in the auction as she couldn't bear to part with it. To this day it is still in her family ownership…. in Canada!!

Looks like the machines are carefully being removed while a couple of gash tables and a pack of cards are thrown over board. More done for the cameras, but very interesting.

Charming video of my seaside town in better times. A lot of the art deco buildings in the video now sadly gone as is the very unusual Barrys building itself, all hit by mysterious fires at the dead of night while waiting for listed status.
