Can anyone shed any light on this one? Cabinet looks to have been thrown together.

I've seen one in person and looks perfectly fine to me. Can't remember the maker off hand but here's a photo.

Makes more sense when you see your picture gameswat. At first glance on other legs looked alien to machine. Know nothing about it. Came across it for sale. Am I right in thinking it’s a hand cranked machine? Looks to have a spindle on the side for a handle?

Funnily enough the one I saw was in Aust years ago and the new owner got it cheap because it was thought to be a hokey machine! I'll have a look through my books later today and see what I can find for you.

OK, I had a vague memory who made it but needed to track down verification. It's by Rosenfield of New York circa 1905. That date is from the Dr Smith auction catalogue of 1994 with descriptions written by Dick Bueschel, and he wasn't often wrong. And yes a clockwork mech originally.

Just remembered that the Selector Mutoscope standing next to it was purchased at this auction by John Gresham for his museum, but I don't think it arrived before his death.

I posted a picture of one of these in the Coin operated stereo viewers topic, labelled 'Variscope'. Don't know where I got that name. :!?!: Also, the other Rosenfield viewer called 'Vaudoscope'.

Variscope?
Variscope?

Kraft Auctions in America has two viewers, almost identical to your machine, but catalogued as Mills in their sale next Saturday. I suspect they're actually Rosenfield.
