Hi Top color choice

Post by marktol »

Hi,

Whilst I look forward to the delivery of the lovely machine I won in the pennymachines auction I've been thinking about what color to paint it.

It's a 777 special award and I want to go with something original looking. I want a base of blue but can't decide on which color to do the centre with. I'm either thinking red, yellow or gold as I've seen examples of all which look good. Attached is a picture of something similar so you know what I mean.

Would appreciate your opinion on what would stand out the most yet still retain an original look.

Cheers

I tend to refer to Dieter Ladwig's book for the best colour combinations.

However our resident expert at bandit colours Stuartpot is the oracle.

Slot Machines Dieter Ladwig
Tiger Books International London
ISBN 1-85501-482-3

It's been out of print for ages however they keep popping up on eBay & Amazon.
Mr P used to have a warehouse full.

Not known for history or technical prowess, however pictorially superb.

I believe that if your machine is the one in the first photo (or exactly like it) its a 1947 "Twenty one" hi-top and if it really has to be blue then the first option for me.
I like blue but ive never been happy with a machine ive done in blue, never seems to quite work. If I was doing this machine id go with the color of the one below which is believed to be an original color.

Thanks Paul,

It's not thst exact machine, doesn't have the dagger handle nor the bonnet at the top. Those were the only pics I found that represented the colour scheme I was thinking of going for that's all.

It's a fairly standard looking Hi Tip with the owl in the middle and the coin denom on the right.

I don't even need to check page 56!
I understand there is an even better example as the page 56 one is "Not a great restoration as the paint was obviously stripped off but re-applied (possibly?) with the colours back to front and paint on castings not lining up plus straight-edged rather than scalloped as it should have been.
And it's a 6d re-badged for the US dime."
............. according to our resident expert! !THUMBS!
