Mills Novelty Poker Hand 5 Reel Slot Machine the Jockey

Post by treefrog »

This finished today at auction in Essex, for £2400 to an internet bidder...these sell in the US for way more than this and date back to around 1905ish.....

Only problem is I spent ages comparing this machine to others on the net and something didn't feel right about the finish. Living not a long way away, I decided to view.....I am convinced this is a repro, crude castings, very new parts fressh off the workshop, I guess I will leave others to judge. If it were original, very rare indeed.

The auctioneer told me the buyer paid $5000 for it a few years ago and bought it online from the states

i was bidding on this, got to say the auctioneers were good at replying to questions but would not post it.
as for looking like a repro , some american restorers have the knack of making them look better than when
they were made.

I should have taken some pictures, but yes I was wondering if this was the job of an over zealous restorer.....The rear door conveniently had no key, so could not look at the mechanism. The case to me was a repro, had absolutely no age, all the edges were sharp and no knocks etc. Still it did play and with 3 players as it was meant to.......

Been a long day for me, auction I the morning and auction in the evening. Still at least I walked away with one machine from the morning auction....A Merkur

Well done on The Merkur, I didn't spot that one otherwise you'd have had competition for it ... :#:

I had assumed people had either missed it or could not be bothered to bid. There was no online bidding, it was a tiny auction in a church and only one other bidder in the room against me, also you had to collect the goods the same day.....also came with a 1000 old pennies. Have yet to check out the machine like the skill top, although the coin entry has been modified I guess maybe when converted to british pennies. Very pleased as love the casting shape of these machines

i saw the merkur and saw that there was no online bidding

wasnt titled well enough to attract the widest audience so

thought there well may be a low priced opportunity for someone

so well done, hopefully the other bidder didnt push you too hard.
