Re: The ROMA has Landed
Yes, it's spinning but it seems quite slow and prolonged? but I've never played on one so perhaps this is normal.
Secondly, it doesn't payout... I can't for the life of me work quite out how the payout detector knows when there is a win.
I can say there is some sort of activity on the payout slides when the reels stop, like a small click.
I've taken off the coin tube and all slides are intact, they aren't broken. I have worked out that on the front of the payout sides casting, there is a vertical rod, when this rod is moved up by hand the payout slides shoot forward, hence their motion is correct. The slides do move, so there is no jam in the coin payout mech.
The slides are then reset when the handle is pulled again.
However, I am not getting payouts, where should I be looking first, what is common with these not to payout, e.g. a bit of servicing required?
Thanks, Malc

Re: Beromats and conversions
We have a manufacturer:- Vale Amusement Supplies of Rhyl, North Wales.
They were chiefly a distributor, specializing in bingo paraphernalia and, in the 70s and 80s, got involved in sweet vending cranes.
I believe Ruffler & Walker may have been responsible for the metal-fronted conversions and there were surely other Beromat revampers.
The Amusement Equipment Company Ltd. of Wembley converted German wall bandits to the old penny, re-laminated them and Anglicized the screen-printed glasswork but they didn't re-case them as far as I know.

Re: The ROMA has Landed
Yes, they're designed to spin much longer than their American counterparts because of a German gaming regulation that stipulated a minimum of 15 seconds (I think) between each play. To get around this, British revampers and operators would bind the governor (inside the clock enclosure) with fuse wire, to speed things up.
The failure to payout is probably caused by grime and congealed lubricant, as described in an earlier thread. Strip right down, have a thorough clean up, lubricate and put your clothes back on.
Seriously, I think cleaning and re-lubricating is all that's required. A bit of a chore, but on the bright side, if it had worked perfectly maybe it would have cost more.

Yes, when I googled "vale amusement supplies" I found your post last March re. the one in the Victorian Casino auction.
I forgot to mention, the proprietor was Sam Moffatt.

Re: The ROMA has Landed
Well, after some more spinnings and working out how the payout cogs match the slides and actuate the rod that releases those slides, it's paying out. Reels are now spinning a lot more freely, faster and stopping in order thanks to a bit of very light sewing machine oil. The parts that stopped the reels were very stiff on some reels explaining why reel 1 was out of order. So, it's working and with a bit of fettling and cleaning I'm sure it's going to be fine. Released front panel which is held by a chain, so lower half all drops forward and top front panel lifts up, took out the old fluorescent tubes to get replaced tomorrow. Wiring looks very clean but gonna get my sparky friend to check it out. Hopefully get it lit up soon. Makes quite a nice clunk when the old pennies come out and my first 1D machine.

Re: Beromats and conversions
Thanks guys, looking at the chrome stars on the bandit you posted and mine having identical stars, it makes sense. Your detection work is much appreciated. Many many thanks. Malc

That's a great find mal , fantastic looking machine and an easy fettle.
Hope you have great fun with her.

Wouldn't normally be a big fan of this type of bandit, but I have to admit it is very stylish classic 50s/60s design. Suspect this would have a much greater appeal than the original type Beromats to a wider audience. Looks in great unmollested condition as well.....
Looks like you ended up with a nice buy

Re: The ROMA has Landed
It's growing on me day by day, and it is being bought into life, namely by playing it. The long spin cycle is quite appealing especially when you line up a winning pair on the front waiting for the third reel. Sparky is looking at it tonight, it has a 2 X 8w Phillips choke on it which drives the fluorescent tubes and although I found a circuit on it with a meter, I suspect this is defective as both original tubes were blown.
He can get these choke units so I'm hoping that it will bring it all to life with the lighting up of the front. One thing it isn't quite doing, when the coin goes into the mech the handle pulls but it doesn't always release the coin. If you pull the handle in one swift movement, the coin is released. You can put another coin into the coin slot when reels are spinning and the coin mech correctly holds the coin till play cycle is finished releasing it ready for the next handle pull. The coin tray had been painted white, underneath this paint on the front is a brass like gilt which looks quite nice. I might get this chromed to match in with the chrome stars and flashings on the front. If anybody has got a Beromat and has a camera to hand, I would be interested in looking at the positions of the reel stops, the first reel sort of clicks into place then becomes firmly held, where the others are more defined. However, looking at a youtube clip of a Duchess machine, I could hear a similar noise on the first reel stopping so maybe that's just how they are. One last question, should the handle remain down when you play and then slowly work its way up?? The video I saw showed this happening. My handle flies back so I suspect I need to adjust the handle pump. This might be connected to the coin not being released into the coin tubes/cash box.

Re: The ROMA has Landed
Sorted coin mech, put new spring on. Now releasing coin when handle pulled. Old one was too rigid, so not enough give for coin.
Re: The ROMA has Landed
In my experience the handle should fly back up and not slowly move back up. If it is slowly moving up I think that the air pump inside (not sure of the correct name) has been tightened too much. This releases the air slowly and the handle will move slowly upwards.
Hope this helps.

slotalot wrote:Hi Malcymal , Nice One!... it looks as if it was reworked by the same firm that did the Bronx that Pennymachines posted last week .. I used to have a standard Beromat type machine and I let it go because it looked dull... but I can tell you that I wish I had this one instead... I think it looks quite good, and is in keeping with the 1960s style of machine, I also think that if it works ok the word bargain springs to mind... well done.
Sorry guys, I'm not ignoring you. I am currently in hospital and have been for about 2 weeks. I get a couple of hours leave each day and check my favourite sites as and when I can.
Stuart .... Are you talking about The Beromat I bought from you?
I do like the English conversions and am particularly fond of the R&W ones with the bowed translucent front. You can always speed the cycle up a bit, usually you'll find the governor weights are wired shut. Harold should be stepping in at this moment to confirm/deny.
I feel it's a bit sad when a Beromat or one the versions with a re-spin or brake delay is converted as they lose that addition then. These are really super options that never appeared on other bandits. I have a Primus which has the following: -
* Restart the first reel after it's stopped.
* Payout lock-down if the machine is thumped, which resets on next play.
* Free play on win line that let's you .... errrr .. have a free go.
And all the above without using a spark of electrickery ..... fantastic!
If any of you guys need bits I've got three mechs to scrap ..... but be patient as I'm still only visiting from hospital.

Re: The ROMA has Landed
Well, some more fettling tonight with electrics. Had an old 8W X 2 choke in it that must have been 40 years old at least and shot to bits. We changed the wiring to two single circuits using 2 separate small chokes and kept it all as neat as possible so as not to disturb the look of the machine inside, keeping original bell wire. Plugged her in and got first circuit working, then finished off second. The Roma looks rather nice now and I can play her silky smooth quiet mech at night without waking anybody up.
