The problem with grease is it attracts dirt, grit, hair etc.
Then it dries out and goes hard, trapping all the undesirable muck just where you don't want it.

Yes it is very easy to rig so that the jack pot is unobtainable, also very common practice. They're not called bandits for nothing.
