A couple of years ago, I bought a Sega Mad Money unseen, from Facebook. I knew it was rusty, but when it turned up, it looked like it had been dragged out of a canal, but it was almost complete, so I stuck it in the shed 'till I decided what to do with it.

Skip forward to the beginning of February, and I got pinged by Track & Trace and told to isolate for 10 days. So I decided to drag the Sega out of the shed. After a good looking at, I decided to restore it, rather than break it for spares, so after a complete strip down, 2573 hours of de-rusting, a re-paint and some new artwork from Paul Coppin, I got it finished.












I replaced all the lighting with low voltage LED strips, and folded up a new back door.


One thing I had a problem with was the escalator. It would work fine manually, but when you put the mech in it jammed. Coins were bunching up etc. I took it off and had a look, and noticed the coins were jamming in little ridges that had been worn into the outer plate by coins over the years. Quick file with the Dremel, and it's working fine.

Whenever I see that sort of wear on the escalator it always makes me wonder what a 6d machine like this one earned over its working life.What do people think? £10,000? £20,000

Paul, there was only bad wear on the escalator, not much on the rest of the machine. May have been swapped out at sometime over the years.

Edit: Found out I've got a chipped tooth, on one of the clock gears. If anyone has this gear they could sell me, I'd be grateful.

It's amazing the amount of money fruit machines take. I bought a second-hand JPM Tumble (I think that was the model), full size fruit machine (from Blackpool), over 35 years ago for my eldest son as a Christmas present because he was mad keen on these machines!
On these old versions there used to be counters attached for the the money going in and counters for the money being paid out. What an eye opener! As far as my poor memory lets me remember, it took an average over its lifetime of £ 20,000 per year less £5,000 payouts, giving a profit of £15,000 per year. The bloke selling it told me it was 5 years old then and was being sold for almost scrap value as they had to keep up with having the latest models to keep the punters interested. He also mentioned his arcade being on the seafront meant the rates were outrageously expensive.

I have one, better condition ( meant not rusty) I don't have the top front but I 'm looking for 2 things
1) how can I replace the old electric the system by a new update one .. this is my first question
2) the glass and entourage (top left) on the machine where you can see some coins on it is broken and I would like to change all

Does anybody have an idea about where I can find ?

Rather than respond n multiple threads, some answers…..

Glass for escalator window: just cut a piece yourself. Very easy with a cheap glass marker, ruler and some scrap glass.

Lighting change: I assume you mean moving to LEDs. If so, I will not answer this one as personally I hate them on any period machine. It takes the heart out of them and I do not believe you cannot have safe fluorescent lighting. Also, they do not generate much heat (common myth). I will leave to others to advise, as I will just keep sounding like I am stuck in the 1970s …..(what comes to mind are all these classic cars being converted to electric power).

Lastly, free play can be many things, but commonly coins jammed in the escalator. Sharing some pictures of your machine may help.
