Welcome to the forum. I'd never heard of the machine, so googled it. There's a couple of references to it in live auctions, but no photo. Have you a photo? I for one am intrigued.

All I know about BGL of London is they produced the only known electric wooden boxed game based on speedway (I only know this because I'm a fan of speedway and its history). As far as I can remember this game was made about 1936 (could well be wrong on that).

I think you place a coin on the the board, set as in lower photo, on desired odds.... evens, 2/1, 5/1 or 8/1....When the button is hit, it reveals the lower level and the red squares (upper photo)... If your coin is now on a red square you win and get paid at the appropriate odds... The under-board is randomly rotated by the operator via a knob at the side, so no one knows where the red squares will appear.

If the operator pays out on two red squares (as depicted in photo) he would rapidly lose money no matter which two were revealed.

These were clearly made for a bit of fun at home (there was a fad for this sort of home entertainment in the 30s) rather than as a money maker. Although I could be wrong, I don't think you're right about the banker losing money. There are 16 available squares. If you cover all of them and the best poss winner comes up, you get 15. Any other winner would be an even bigger loser and that is if all the squares have an even chance of coming up, which I suspect they don't or there would be no point in betting on even or 2 to 1. It is also possible that the photo shows the board not completely at the end of its cycle, as four of the squares are not yet exposed. Perhaps one of the red squares disappears by the time the cycle is complete.

Hi :D ,
I know this may not be a lot of help :!?!: but it will help you to put a date to any B.G.L (British Games Limited) items.
It would appear that B.G.L. ran from the early 1920s untill 1937 when it was put into voluntary liquidation, so your game must be pre 1937 !SAINT!

Oops, minutes after posting and re reading the instructions I realised I had made a faux pas in misinterpreting the instructions - and one of my pleasures of this hobby, and of betting in general, is to work out odds and percentage payouts !PUNISH!
Is a combination of old age and grotty French wine an acceptable excuse?

By coincidence I finally managed to find an excuse to pop into Junktion Antiques near Boston, Lincs yesterday, just before the snow hit us and they have one of these. This is hardly surprising given the huge array of the unusual objects at Jack's place... It was good to have a natter, although I did not buy anything.

Didn't look at the price ticket, most of which were either not there or faded, but looking at the site, looks like their one was a lower quality item not in a wooden box: http://www.junktionantiques.co.uk/galle ... edway-Game

There were a few slots machines there that are not on their website, like a Bryans Walden Goliath crane.
