Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Hi, anyone out there know where I can get a replacement lock for this machine? I have tried getting a new key cut for mine, but can't find a locksmith that can do the job.
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Locks for allwins can vary in that sometimes the barrel can be set off centre on some models so they are not a universal fit without some 'carpentry'. It may be best that you remove the lock, photograph it with measurements and post here. Someone may have a suitable replacement.
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Will do thank you for the heads up. Will post it in a couple of days as I am waiting for the last locksmith I tried to return the lock!
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
So got the lock back and the pic is below. Measurements oddly enough are in metric. Long side 6cm. Short side 4.5cm. Distance between lip edge and centre of barrel 2.75cm. Writing on barrel H&F with what looks like a J across the &. And the number 560. Does anyone know where I can either get a replacement key or a replacement lock? I have exhausted all avenues down here. Thank you, Mei-mei

The easiest way would be to get keys cut to suit. I don't see how an outfit who can't/won't cut keys for a simple lock like this can call themselves locksmiths.
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Only if you use a metric scale to take the dimensions.mei-mei wrote:Measurements oddly enough are in metric
I recall many years ago we sent an office junior out to measure a small Victorian house and when he returned feeling very pleased with himself I said "Oh no you have measured it in metric! as it was built from imperial bricks and materials you have to measure it in imperial and then convert it to metric to draw the building!! " - You should have seen his face
(we did tell him....... later)

Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Sorry MM, didn't mean to be mean with my old fashioned notion that locksmiths cut keys for locks. It's not as if the blanks aren't available for these. I reckon we need one of our gurus here to give us all a step by step tutorial on cutting keys for locks.
Fortunately there are still some proper locksmiths where I live - a few miles from the historical centre of British lock making. Yours came from there: Humphrey & J Fox (Century Locks Ltd., 1814-1990), Century Works, 4 Moat Street, Willenhall. As you get involved with these machines, the lock becomes something more than an incidental gadget for holding the door shut - it's part of the machine and its history, so original is best.
This is a useful resource: A Gazetteer of Lock and Key Makers
I'm sure I can get the keys cut for you if you have no luck locally.

If it is not too much trouble would you get one cut for me? I thought it was Argee being mean not you? Mei-mei

Hi, just took a peek at the lock and key makers site. Fantastic, they are an art form all by themselves. Particularly liked the combination padlock made by John Hough. How come all the smart guys are in your part of the country and I've got diddly down here!

Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
I made a simple lock pick and opened my yale lock then set about cutting my own key, it's not that difficult. You need a blank of course and I had to do a bit of convincing as to why I wanted blank keys. You need to understand how your lock works, look on Youtube, plenty of lock picking videos on there then you'll see what the key does. A bit of paint or tipex on the blank then inserted into the lock will reveal what the key is trying to hit and what it's trying to avoid it's just a case of removing material with a hacksaw and file a bit at a time. Have a go.

Neat idea briansshort will give it some thought after I have checked out You tube. Mei-mei

What, me......... mean? my grandchildren think I am a cuddly old chap.mei-mei wrote:I thought it was Argee being mean not you
We did tell the poor office lad in the end, so he did not have to go out again - so instead, the boss got him to stand on a concrete block for a while to test the crushing strength !
Incidentally, I also have one of those locks without a key so that will be my next job, good idea Mr PM to seek advice from 'one of our gurus here, to give us all a step by step tutorial on cutting keys for locks'
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Soooo Argee did you also send him out for a 'long stand' or some 'tartan paint' or 'a replacement bubble for a spirit level'?
Re: Lock for allwin flick ball machine
Mr Pennymachines is spot on, best to keep the lock you have. I needed a key for my first allwin - a basic, traditional lock most seen on Oliver Whales, early Bryans and Wondermatics machines. Two 'locksmiths' were not interested and the third, someone who called himself a master locksmith that specialised in safe locks kept the lock for two weeks said it would be too expensive to do, without actually quoting me a price so presumably he couldn't be bothered. Mei-Mei, when you say 'down here', where is that?
