British (or German) H&F lock needed or source

Post by walternewton »

I have an Allwin, which has a bottom (front) cash door.

The Allwin only came with one key, for the upper door lock.

I had to drill out the cash door lock.

It says on the lock "H&F 585."

I'm having a lot of trouble finding a comparable lock here in the states.

An suggestions (manufacturers, sources, maybe you have one in your parts bin?)

It has a thick and long nose(barrel, 3/4 diameter, 1 1/4 long) and most of the cabinet-type locks I have found are much smaller.

Thanks in advance.

 No you didn't, silly mistake, especially since you're dealing with an overseas machine. I've opened and removed locks on well over 30 such locked machines by just removing the back plywood panel. And in worst case scenario when the screws are all rusted in place I just sacrifice the easily replaced plywood to save the usually very hard to match original locks.

It's not my standard modus operandi to drill locks, but I checked with a number of locksmiths here, they didn't want anything to do with a foreign lock.

And I have limited mobility, so standing up at the back of the machine try to remove the back would have put me on the floor in about two minutes. Severe back and weight problems.

I really didn't realize the lock was such a heavy-duty piece. Normally I can find an antique cabinet lock to replace these door locks. But when I got into it, and removed the lock, I realized I was not dealing with a normal drawer/cabinet lock.

Any way, I agree with you, but now it's done.

My bad.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

My lock is ...

2 /38 inch wide
1 7/8 inch height

Mounting holes ...

2 inch wide, center to center of hole
1 1/8 height, center to center of hole

Nose

6/8 inch diameter
1 inch height (overall, from backplate to end of nose)

That may help.

Actually the ones I have are marked H and T V......they seem similar to yours and also there are Yale locks exactly same size in the mix.

I will draw up detailed specification and send to you via PM

Very nice looking 1930s machine Walter and what looks to be a pediment as well - unusual to find a machine with an original pediment

Thanks.
Yes, it still has the pediment.
I had to fuss with the unit that drops the ball after you put in a coin, but that was the only major problem. Otherwise, a little bending here or there (the coin chute at the coin cup was a bit off), and sometimes a ball would get stuck after entering a hole, had to lightly bend some metal in the ball return at the top.
I used to have a number of allwins, back in the '70s, when you could buy them for $50 in the States.

Yes, those dimensions work fine. Any lock you have that fits those dimensions should be fine.
Can you give me a price (in a PM) and shipping cost to Conifer, Colorado. I will give you the my address and contact phone number in a PM.

Thanks for doing this.
