Are they just for show though? They're sealed between backboard and glass.

Is it just a clever way of displaying the denomination to be used? I've never seen one but it looks like the coin/token that gets played runs along the top of the row of tokens/coins. If you look at the photo of the "Ice Hockey" version above it shows a long row of what looks like small coins.

Yes, it was probably just a way of displaying what the machine would pay out (which could originally have been mixed value tokens or 10 Pfennig coins). As German games often did pay from a coin run, players would have known what it indicated. The two discs in play are a bit smaller than a 10 Pfennig and have holes in their centres.

Interesting that the last model they made, the 1957 JoJo, did away with the row of coins/tokens in favour of the usual German catalogue of instructions. Compare the number of words used on "Ice Hockey" to those on "JoJo".

Definitely adding these to my want-list. I really like the innovative aspects of it. Are there other machines with similar play where you have to land 2+ tokens on sensors?
Maybe this kind of design is a one-off for the ages! (well, a one-off design with at least 4 re-skins).

Re: Gunther Wulff Elektromat
A collector friend of mine in Germany told me today this would be considered a bargain in Germany
Re: Gunther Wulff Elektromat
Can you ask what they go for in Germany normally?
I don't have the cash for this one, but I wouldn't mind owning one some day.
