Two Regina Beromats restored

Post by tallstory »

Ages ago I bought two Regina Beromats one arm bandits at an auction in Eastbourne. My plan was to take parts from one to make one working machine - they were both in a parlous state. When I finished the first machine, I thought it would be fun to try and restore the donor machine. It's taken a long time to find the parts needed (would have been impossible without the help of forum members) and there were long delays getting the chrome redone (Covid problems at the platers). But here they are together, working at last.

I am posting them here because lots of people asked to see the end result. A few, anyway. Well, one person in fact. Hope he enjoys it as much as I did doing the work. %|%

Well done tallstory, I do like to see time and effort spent on returning these Cinderellas to good health.
It's nice as well they're still on the 15 seconds play.

A tiny point, as you indicated they are Reginas, consequently they are not Beromats. Both types being manufactured by Günter Wulff.
It's like saying your car is a Cortina Escort.

Out of curiosity do the re-start buttons work?

Keep up the good work, a lot of people make the error (IMO) in ignoring these important and fantastically engineered machines because of Mazak and the need to care for it differently.
I'm not claiming Mazak is not problematic, it can be, especially when not plated, however, a thin coat of oil on the surface helps protect it. Most would be surprised how much of it is used in day to day objects around the house and also the car you spent £Ks buying. Even the E type Jag (Bonnet Badge) and The McLaren F1 sports car has oodles of it. in fact nearly every car made in the world uses the alloy in its door handle. And while you're waving your Glock around in a crowded bank best keep a firm grip on it, it won't benefit from being dropped onto a tiled floor due to the amount of Mazak it's made from.
Wikipedia lists the following products as being rich in the stuff: -

Rickenbacker guitar "R" tailpieces
Gibson Tune-o-Matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece
Staplers
Safety razors (most modern mass-market production)
Handles
Locks
Die-cast toys
Sheet metal tooling
Automotive parts
Ceiling fans
Golf clubs
Fishing reels

Thanks BP
I do have a Cortina Escort three wheeler in the garage too. I suppose I use the Beromat label because the mechs are almost identical and more people know this term better.

I think the problem with the zinc alloy material was getting the mix right (did I read that molybdenum was in short supply at the time and substitutes didn't work as well?) Many parts of these machines have latest over 60 years while others had fallen apart before I got them.

The restart buttons do work - sort of. They don't restart a full spin but just push the first reel on a number or two. Looking at the mechanism makes me think this is what is intended but other might know better.

As with all Wullf bandits, there is little difference between the mechanisms.

I've seen two types of restart mechanisms over the years.
One as you described lifts the reel stop and the imbalance of the reel allows it to move on a symbol or two.
The other is more complicated yet less controllable. As the previous one it lifts the reel stop, but then it releases a spring loaded lever which engages with the reel and gives it a healthy flick.

They look fab. Great job. I’ve never worked on a bandit before but keep thinking of looking out for to give it a try.

Well done tallstory nice job, I am also a fan of these often under-rated Germanic machines.
