Thanks for that, had a chance to look at mine and it can hold 3 balls in reserve and has another to play the game. I presume only 1 ball is delivered for 1d. Also it would not play with 9/16"balls, the reserve needed larger balls to fill the space, so I used 5/8" and now it works fine.

Hi Daveslot. Did you source some composite balls or are using chrome/stainless steel? If the former could you let know where from? Also could you possibly upload a picture of the mechanism? Be great to see full picture of your machine.

I had a few vintage composite balls in stock. There's 2 pictures of the mech in this thread already. Mine is identical.

Hi, I’ve just acquired an Edgerton Double Loop that came with 4 steel balls. Was interested to read this old thread saying it should have composite balls. Does anyone know where to acquire an equivalent to composite balls? I’ve searched a few bearing suppliers and 5/8" bearings are available in a wide variety of materials but I don’t know where to start in terms of finding something that will deal with the hammer impact and still be as light as a vintage composite ball. Any advice welcomed.

Maybe these 5/8" Alumina Ceramic ball bearings would work, at £18 a pop.

Thanks for the reply. Have decided to try balls made from Delrin which appears to be the material used for casino grade roulette balls. Fingers crossed they work, will let you know how I get on in case others are looking for an alternative to steel balls for older machines |/XX\|

I have used Delrin balls before for a large floor standing Darts game, which uses large balls and pings around great. I also used them on a Handan Ni 4 ball machine and the problem on this machine, they seemed too light and bounced around a lot, I thought they would have more weight to them, but Delrin is quite lights also expensive...

Were ceramic balls used in machines on this period !PUZZLED!

treefrog wrote: Tue Aug 19, 2014 5:42 pmVery unusual play with a flap at the top to allow the ball into the top loop controlled by the ball release. The balls were hidden in the double token vendors, so I was able to test the play. Shame I never took any pictures as the mechanism had an unusual chain driven feature for the flap and ball release.....only things missing were the key and top gallery. Even had the original cash tray...
Can you please explain the specifics of the game play?

What are the "reserve balls"?
What exactly controls the flap that changes which section you're targetting?

No, but as composite balls seem impossible to find, I thought ceramic might be a decent substitute for appearance and weight. But maybe too heavy. :!?!:

Insert a penny to release (several) balls. Turn the handle on the left to feed the first ball to the hammer. Shoot the ball and it spirals to the upper gallery (like a normal allwin). If it misses the gallery, it's returned via the left hand ball exit hole to the hammer for another shot. If it lands in a red pocket, the gate to the left of the lower gallery closes and the ball is returned via the left hand exit hole to the hammer. The next shot will be played on the lower gallery. A ball landing in the silver or gold pockets on the lower gallery delivers a token by turning the handle. This handle also reopens the track gate, so when a new ball is brought into play it always goes to the top gallery.

Balls falling into the blue pockets, I believe, go to the reserve ball reservoir which can be released by scoring a hit in the central upper gallery pocket. These are delivered to the ball feed above the hammer.

Described in the patent.

So I received my Delrin balls in the post. They’re actually a bit heavier than I expected and so was full of optimism that they’d be the ideal solution. They do have excellent “pingability” and shot around the loops. But...the 5/8 inch balls are a shade too large and they got stuck in the mech. Still it made my wife chuckle when she heard me complaining that my balls are too big! So, after spending the last 30 mins fishing them out of the mech, I’m going to stick with Delrin but try 9/16. Will let you know how I get on |/XX\|
