Coventry Auction - Sunday 27th November 2016

As is predicted, nice machines are coming up in both auctions, so what to do

Of course one can leave bids at the elephant, but it is not the same. One can easily view both auctions in advance of course, but.......

One option is to buddy up with someone, so who wants to to split cash and act in proxy for both auctions It is a shame the timings of both auctions don't differ more. The other problem for the elephant will be cash flow, as a much higher % of wins will be bids left.......

That makes it sound like an accident or something unavoidable.
Rather than the aggressive and deliberate act that it is.

JC and I have been impressed and very grateful at the number of lots that have already been entered for Coventry by today's date .... without us banging on people's doors.
So far we have double the number of vendors than we've had on previous years. That says something
Normally we are pestering the regulars like crazy around now, but this year they have rallied for us.

Hence, we truthfully guarantee that every lot at Coventry is entered to be sold.

As has already been said The EH decision to crash our date is not simply a business decision it's pure self greed.
It inconveniences everybody but them.
However it does harm ......

*The Vendors
*The Buyers

I don't blame anyone going for the machine they want, and I also wonder what kind of events you all want in the future and how you feel about being manipulated.

I know people will moan at me..they always moan at me on here..Im used to it
but in my view..and only my view,(Im not trying to influence anyone else), Im choosing Coventry on principle and sod any machines at EH Id might like, Ill go to EH any other time,no problem but this time Ill make my personal stand..because of the way this was done and the obvious reasons why it was done

I doubt it, most are only interested in getting a bargain not the hobby as a whole or the long term effects
even if he has he wont admit it of course,I could write his reaction to the 27th Nov auction right now

I will be at Coventry for one simple reason................. it is organised by dedicated collectors who are more than willing to help fellow collectors in this interesting hobby, they deserve support.

as mentioned several times in the thread if this attempt to destroy the Coventry auction was successful (it wont be) the long term effects on the hobby would be determental to the hobby as a whole, as to what collectors do, as I said I doubt Steve has shot himself in the foot because,as I inferred looking for a bargain is what most people do, I have chosen to boycott Eh because I believe its the best thing for the hobby thats all

p.s. if your a bandit man like me there are twice as many bandits at Coventry than there are at EH (not including SH) as of todays lists

But Paul the issue is collectors will carry on, selling and buying will still happen etc etc , I do not believe it is bad for the hobby, but I do agree is is unnecessary as there is room for both. That is the sad part of it......

What is interesting is that volumes of machines are being submitted to both which confirms that the above.

These days I tend to have spread my collecting interests and there are 3 or 4 machines I am interested in both auctions, that there lies the issue as a collector, one should not feel guilty for that, as such as per my original post, any buddies out there, not that I would trust you with my cash

So i ask two questions 1.then why did he do it as clearly its not in his interest to cut possible attandance on the day? 2. What does he hope to gain from it if not to gain a monolopy of the market in the long run?
You yourself have said its causing you a problem because you want machines at both auctions,isnt that alone bad for the hobby? Of course it is

I will definitely supporting Coventry. Jerry and Jeremy organise these events for us and the hobby we all love and have done so for a number of years. The clash of dates caused by Elephant house appears to be a deliberate act to try and stop them. The silly thing is most of us would have attended both auctions if they had been on different weekends.

It's always great to see a great debate but at the end of the day its choice, there are good machines in both including things that have been in before, that's if the items promised actually turn up on the day ( beyond control of the auction, I know) if your coming from the south coast for that special item its a long way to come to be disappointed, at least this time we can call in EH on the way for a look, then proceed to Coventry ( for a warm up!) and see how good that special item is if its there, and perhaps then see who draws the short straw to stay in the ice box!

If you are all such dedicated hobbyists you'll all be sent to Coventry, sorry going to Coventry any way. So does it matter who goes to EH or the working mans club that time forgot. Well the other collectors and I in Oz all feel so badly about this dilemma of not one, but TWO specialist coin-op auctions on the same day that we've all put our hands in our pockets and..... shuffled on home to cry. I guess for us the only thing even coming close to any kind of coin-op auction in the last four years was the recent Michael Woolf sale in nearby New Zealand. Just a touch of bidding from photos, unknown auction house packing quality and fees, overseas shipping and import duty/sales tax to get excited about. So please stop occasionally to remember the fallen in the colonies and how damn good you all have it over there no matter how many auctions you can't attend or miles to drive on the A4.

At this point I'll add my sixpence worth, having been to many auctions in the past but never to these two both on the same day. I have a dilemma with only limit funds to spend, always looking for a bargain, wanting to go to Coventry's Auction because I only discovered it on this forum and because most on here say it's for collectors. Do I go to the other at Elephant House instead as I might get a better chance there (I also like enamel signs), do I just go to EH or do I go to both or just Coventry. I also have to pick up another machine either on the way or way back that I bought for spares. On top of all these desissions my Mrs keeps asking me what our are plans are for next weekend. Lifes complicated collecting old machines and for our Oz friend it's about a 220 mile round trip for me!

The success of Coventry will be down to the amount of buyers that turn up, I'm torn between the two auctions but reluctant to leave an absentee bid on an item at the EH without looking at it first, but if Coventry where to offer absentee bids on items...happy days! everybody's a winner.... you would probably have to extend the auction an extra hour or so for the buyers to collect their goodies if successful.
