Biplane Shooting Game

Post by arrgee »

I recall back in the 1950s and early 60s, playing an air combat shooting game whilst on holiday, think it may have been at Paington. It had a rifle that was aimed at a screen which showed a movie film of flying biplanes. The object of the game was to hit as many of these aircraft as possible and the film shown on screen was of actual biplanes flying, as in a dogfight. When the game was over a small section of 35mm black and white movie film was ejected, the film strip had about 5 or 6 frames showing the biplanes and it was 'pierced' with small holes to indicate if you had hit any aircraft. It was a great game to play and I remember keeping these small sections of film for years afterwards.

Does anyone remember this game or its name, or anything about it?

Arrg, only game I know of like this is the Radio Rifle, but that only uses one frame of 35mm film per play, unless someone altered that but I don’t think it could be easily done the way this game was designed? I guess someone in the UK could've copied the Radio Rifle quite closely?

I have a radio rifle
I was given a brand new roll of film last year by the seller of the machine some
Years ago. He found them somewhere else and weren’t originally with the machine.
How strange 🥳

Arg, thanks, but I wasn't asking to be thanked for info that might not even be relevant. Is Radio Rifle the same machine you remember though misremebered the gameplay, or was there another similar but different machine!?

gm - it could well have been the Radio Rifle but if you say that the machine only used one frame per play then it could be that what we did after numerous game plays, was sellotape the frames together to form a strip of the frames. I can still hear that dull 'thud thud' as the trigger was pulled!

I remember that the machine had a built in screen that displayed the flying biplanes. Does yours have the screen jingle?
