Flick-O-Rama Penny Arcade - Rhyl Children's Village

Post by Guest »

Hi, fantastic site. Just wanted to let you know of another old penny arcade that I have visited. It is on the seafront at Rhyl, North Wales, above the underground seafront car park, next to the carousel. Sorry, don't recall the name. Strictly old penny machines only. There are about 40 machines in there. Not been for a couple of years but would be surprised if it wasn't still there now. Was very popular when I visited.

Can anyone confirm its location and whether it's still there?

Keep up the good work!

Old amusements arcade in Rhyl?

Post by Ray »

After making enquiries, it appears that the vintage arcade at THE CHILDRENS' VILLAGE, RHYL has now closed. It has not been open since the end of 2004 season. I will keep you posted on any further information.

Penny Arcade - Rhyl Children's Village

Had a bit of a gander to see if anyone else had posted similar, and not too much luck, so thought I'd ask if anyone has any photo's or memories of the penny arcade that used to reside in the Children's Village, Rhyl, North Wales circa late '90s, early 2000s?

It's a shame it appeared to come and quickly go. I'm assuming vintage didn't have the same pull it does today. :!?!:

So Derek Ralph who, with Lisa Marshall, ran the Flick-O-Rama vintage penny arcade (originally, Now Here's A Funny Thing Amusement Museum), on the central promenade in Rhyl, previously operated machines with Tina Bell from the Lucky Bells Amusement Parlour, 6 Ambrose Lloyd Centre, Mold, Flintshire, CH7 1NR, before some (possibly unfair) press from a local business and a bit of bother with the local council:

Salon boss fearful over arcade teens NorthWalesLive, May 2008
STAFF and customers of a Mold hair styling salon say they were under siege from a gang of teenage yobs at the weekend.
Blodwen Kelly, who runs David For Hair in the small arcade behind the Somerfield supermarket, described the incident as “horrendous”.
She said trouble flared on Saturday afternoon when about 12 teenagers aged between 14-16 tried to “skateboard” on a small bike outside the shops.
“They would jump off just before the bike hit the front of premises in the mall, damaging window shutters.” said Blodwen.
“One of my staff went out and brought the bike inside when it struck our plate glass window. The lads then started to shout and got abusive, demanding the bike back.
“We were so frightened and upset we had to lock ourselves in the salon and call the police.
“Eventually an officer arrived and asked us to return the bike.
“She spoke to the kids and took a couple of their names.
“That’s not much good, they come back here time and time again causing a nuisance.
“It’s so bad with kids hanging around outside we now have to escort customers to the salon from the car park.”
Blodwen said if the anti-social behaviour continued, the salon’s future could be under threat.
She believes part of the problem is youngsters congregating outside an amusement arcade – Lucky Bells – in the shopping mall.
But Derek Ralph, who runs the business with former dental nurse Tina Bell, said: “There was an isolated incident at the weekend.
“One of our customers left his bike outside and some kids started playing with it. The incident was nothing to do with us and we have no trouble with youngsters.
“The cycle owner knocked on the salon door to try and get his bike back.”
Blodwen said the arcade did not have planning consent as Flintshire County Council had turned down an application for change of use from retailing to a family entertainment centre.
But Mr Ralph said the arcade could remain open as he and Ms Bell were appealing against the planning decision to the Welsh Assembly.
A council spokesman said: “We are considering the appropriate action to take with regard to this premises in the light of their most recent planning application being refused.”
Mold-based Insp Alun Oldfield said: “Community beat managers Janette Stott and Anthony Butlin are investigating the situation.”
